What the Bible says about Alcohol Abuse

Struggling with drug and alcohol addiction can make addicts, their families, and friends feel helpless and hopeless. But there is no reason to abandon hope, whether you are dealing with addiction yourself or supporting a loved one. Turn to the Bible to see how God views us and our addictions. You may find yourself surprised by how clear the path away from addiction becomes when you put the Word of God first.

Bible Verses About Alcohol Abuse

The Bible explicitly refers to alcohol abuse in numerous verses, too many to cover in this article. To help you understand what the scriptures say about addiction and drug use, especially alcohol, we have selected just a few to elaborate on.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them!

Isaiah 5:11

For he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

Luke 1:15

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18

But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day comes upon you suddenly like a trap.

Luke 21:34

The Bible warns us Christians to stay away from alcohol, clearly citing the consequences of overindulging in this and other drugs. Alcoholism can inflame us, starting to control our lives. This control can soon become a trap for addicts and their loved ones. As the drugs take control, it is becoming harder to follow a productive path.

However, the Bible not only shows us the consequences of addiction, but it is also clear about the alternative. Those who stay away from alcohol will be filled with the Holy Spirit. They will live in peace and experience joy, rooted in their faith.

How Faith is Used in Recovery

Being grounded in faith is the cornerstone of our approach to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Rather than relying on the traditional 12-step approach, we put the Word of God at the center of our recovery program.

Spirituality forms the basis of everything we do. We believe that the root cause of addiction and an addict’s suffering can often be found in unaddressed spiritual needs. Once those needs are starting to be met, it becomes easier to address mental, emotional, and physical needs.

The Bible does not call people out as addicts, so why should you see yourself or your loved ones as only that? Instead, the Bible offers an alternative: getting to know God and becoming filled with the Holy Spirit.

Following a Christian curriculum for recovery allows addicts to see themselves as more than someone struggling. Such an approach to recovery offers hope for the future and an entirely new focus.
