Frequently Asked Questions About

Family Therapy For Addiction Recovery

Family therapy for addiction recovery is a form of counseling that includes family members in the treatment process. It addresses how addiction has affected the entire household, including broken trust, poor communication, enabling behaviors, and emotional wounds, so the family can heal alongside the person in recovery.

Family counseling for addiction is built into our residential treatment phases, not offered as a separate add-on. Unlike programs that limit family involvement to a single visiting weekend, S2L operates as a family counseling rehab where therapists schedule sessions throughout treatment using approaches like Family Systems Therapy, the Gottman Method for couples, and Interpersonal Therapy. Each session is paired with biblical teaching from our full-time ordained pastors. We can accommodate both in-person and remote sessions for out-of-state families.

Individual therapy focuses on the person struggling with substance use. Addiction family therapy brings spouses, parents, children, or other loved ones into the process. At S2L, our clinicians help families identify unhealthy patterns, like enabling, emotional withdrawal, or misplaced blame, and rebuild honest communication on a foundation of faith and forgiveness.

Our therapists work with families on broken trust, codependency, enabling behaviors, communication breakdowns, and the resentment or guilt that often builds over years of addiction.

As Ephesians 4:32 reminds us, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." That kind of grace-filled forgiveness is what we walk families toward in every session.

You don't need to be a Christian to attend S2L Recovery. We welcome individuals and families from all faith backgrounds. That said, Christ is central to everything we do: our curriculum, our counseling, and our community are all grounded in Scripture. Many families who arrive uncertain about the faith component find it to be the most meaningful part of the experience.

S2L provides continued family support through our "My Recovery" Post-Recovery Transition Plan, which includes a Mentor Guide and Student Workbook designed for reintegrating into family, church, and work life. Alumni and their families also have access to the Hope After Addiction podcast, Wednesday Words of Encouragement weekly devotionals, a private Facebook group, alumni events, and a 50% scholarship to Williamson College.

Yes. S2L works with most commercial insurance providers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, UMR, and Prime Health. We also accept TRICARE East (in-network), VA Community Care Network (Optum VACCN), and ChampVA. Our team will help verify your benefits and walk you through your options.
